Using invisible thread on the knitting machine to make a swatch, then setting PVA glue to produce a subtle layer of texture.

More Knitting

Using the silicone cast made from the knit sample, I created a further negative of the fabric by pouring resin over the silicone and removing once set.

Results: The piece is very effective when viewed from the reverse, as the depth and shape of the resin magnifies and enhances the shapes created from the silicone cast.

Silicone Knitting

Using the Plaster of Paris impression as a mould, I poured silicone (as seen in previous blog post) over the surface. After 24 hours, when dry, the silicone can be removed from the mould.

Result: A cast of silicone with the appearance of a knitted textile, however I find the blue colour detracts from what I am trying to create in my work. I may try this again by casting either PVA or a silicone sealant model from the mould.

Plaster of Paris

Mix the Plaster of Paris with water in a ratio of 100:70, place knitting in the bottom of a bowl - I used a small bit of PVA glue to secure it. Pour plaster over and wait approx. 20 minutes.

Once dry I peeled the knitting away from the plaster, although I did consider leaving it in situ as I really like the aesthetic and tactile quality of the plaster against the fibres.
