Erin Curry

Erin Curry is an American artist based in Gainsville, Florida. Her current research and art revolves around "handspinning raw chaotic fiber into orderly line and shaping ordered line into tangled or woven mass".

Polaroids

It is clear from her photography that the drive behind her work in minimal, neutral colour tones and clean, crisp and sharp linear features.

Drawings

Her drawings are based around the practice of hand spinning yarn, and many are graphite prints of her own hand-spun yarn on wood or paper. Erin also uses the drop spindle itself to create drawings, by attaching a pencil to it's bottom to record the process of hand-spinning (middle image).

Sculpture

Hand spun yarns encased between sheets of acrylic plastic. I find these works convey the same aesthetic that I am trying to achieve; capturing a textile in an unfamiliar, sterile material. Using the yarn itself as a drawing and mark-making tool, and creating layers of which build up both dense and sparce areas of composition.
